Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona where we lay our scene…
Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s best known and best loved plays—the classic tale of two star-crossed lovers drawn together in spite of the violence and hatred that surrounds them.
Shakespeare gives the story a sense of poignancy by announcing the tragic outcome in the opening lines; knowing the lovers will die makes their every step towards that fate more deeply felt.
